The Respiratory Functon of Blood

Abstract
Until very recently, methods of storing blood were assessed on the basis of effects on viability -if preserved erythrocytes rather than function, yet the primary purpose of transfusing whole blood is to maintain the delivery of oxygen to the tissue.
Now, it has been shown that the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen is affected by the erythrocytic content of 2, 3-diphosphoglyceric acid (2, 3-DPG) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), that is, failure of oxygen release from hemoglobin due to a decrease in 2, 3-DPG is a possibility.
According to relation of 2, 3-DPG to the hemoglobin-oxygen dissociation curve, numerous attempts are under way to provide anticoagulants that will permit higher levels of 2, 3-DPG to persist during the storage period.
